Investigation widens to include Heartwood Care
Sir Keir Starmer refused our request to investigate Jas Athwal MP. So instead so we have expanded our own investigation with the Freedom of Information request copied below sent earlier today. Other Freedom of Information requests are with the Information Commissioner's Office and a decision on these is expected later this year. Request follows
Dear Redbridge Borough Council,
According to The Londoner (27 October 2024):
“Daljit Johal endorsed Athwal before the 2019 general election and the two men have interacted on multiple occasions in public Facebook posts, including one comment in which Athwal called Johal ‘the Don’. Records show Johal’s company Heartwood Care saw its funding from Redbridge Council rise more than sixfold after Athwal became leader, which both men say had nothing to do with Athwal taking over”. ENDs quote
This increase in funding raises serious questions about propriety and potential conflicts of interest.
Following a recent decision by Sir Keir Starmer not to investigate Jas Athwal we seek the following information and/or documents under the Freedom of Information and/or Environmental Regulations law.
1 – The number of contracts Heartwood Care tendered for with Redbridge Council, Vision or similar organisation controlled by Redbridge Council since Jas Athwal became Council Leader in May 2014.
2- The number of contracts won by Heartwood Care since Jas Athwal became Council Leader in May 2014
3 – All competing tenders for the contracts won by Heartwood Care in (2) above as well as the Heartwood Care tender. Even if these tenders are redacted it will be helpful, especially if Heartwood was ever the sole company to tender.
